As I write this post, I’m reflecting on our complete dependence on software and technology today. While not having access to emails for an hour or so might be a welcome relief to some, an outage on such a critical application not only risks destabilising businesses — invoices delayed, meetings missed — it highlights just how reliant industry now is on technology.
In fact, there are entire industries set up to capitalise on this reliance — a quick search brings up listicles of 50, 100, 200 productivity apps from Slack to Pocket and Wanderlist to Facebook Messenger bots. The irony being that while trying to be productive, there’s a plethora of apps that want to distract you. And in such a sea of services, performance is make or break — something AppDynamics is acutely aware of.
Recently acquired by Cisco for a rumoured $3.7 billion, AppDynamics’ business is making yours more reliable. It monitors application (websites and mobile apps, etc.) performance to highlight faults in real-time, like when the service isn’t aligning with customer expectations. By flagging issues as soon as they happen, support teams can resolve them before customers are inconvenienced and, more importantly, before these customers leave your service to go elsewhere.
This is the idea behind the company’s upcoming AppD Summit Europe, a free enterprise tech professional conference being held at InterContinental London – The O2 on 3rd May. One of the main themes of the event is all about redefining your career and discovering a smarter approach to driving business and application performance.
Ultimately, customers want to get the end result without even realising the steps they’ve taken — without any pain points in the process that remind them they’re using a website or app. Over the past five years, desktop websites have been replaced by mobile-friendly versions, mobile-friendly sites have been threatened by apps, and now apps are at risk from bots. As our reliance on technology grows, so too does our expectation about what it can and should be able to do. We bemoan the fact Amazon’s Alexa can’t understand a simple request all the while forgetting it’s infinitely better than the voice command technology that came before. And opinion matters. Opinion becomes word of mouth, word of mouth becomes reputation, and soon, what appears to be a relatively minor dip in performance becomes a major dip in revenue.
Therefore, brands need to zero in on the importance of performance by becoming smarter in driving their business to meet user expectations. It should no longer be a case of simply having an app, you now need to invest in the people and infrastructure to make that app as much a part of your business as the suppliers who deliver goods and even the chairs your staff need to sit on. It needs to be integral.
This has the added benefit of giving tech professionals the ability to define their careers. Staff with a flair for technology, even if they don’t yet have the full skill set for coding for example, can carve out a niche in both the company they’re in as well as their long-term prospects. They can be at the forefront of an industry that’s disrupting traditional business, and they can help lead the fourth industrial revolution.
